The decision taken by the Bangladesh government of enrolling students in the medical and dental colleges based on their GPA has already been unaccepted by the people of all sects of Bangladesh. Admission test is the one and only way to judge one’s talent not the so-called GPA 5. Now a day’s GPA 5 is something, which can easily be obtained by students through reading some suggestions supplied by the teachers. This new system of medical admission can never be a standard to judge the merit of the students.
While all the students are willing to sit for the admission test what has made the government desperate to take such a big decision is the question unanswered. Students are preparing themselves for the last several months and this unexpected decision taken by the government just stunned them. Several hundred-admission seekers blocked roads, brought out processions, staged sit-in programmes and formed human chains in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Barisal and others districts towns in protest at the government’s decision. They demanded restoration of the admission test system for enrolment in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, or in Latin Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae) and BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) courses. To firm their claim
a memorandum also submitted by them to the health minister in Dhaka. According to them new system would not be transparent rather it would make room for corruption in the admission process.
From my point of view, this decision is very illogical to take students in medical and dental colleges without admission tests and based on their GPA results. Surely, the authority will never be able to keep this admission system transparent and this will make room for corruption, as the students do not know how many marks they have obtained in different subjects as boards provide grade point sheet instead of marks sheet.
Secondly, the students had taken preparations for admission to medical colleges for over one year. Some of them were ready to sit for the second time. Because of the decision to scrap the admission test, they would be deprived of the opportunity to enroll at medical and dental colleges.
Thirdly, students who were going to sit for the second time now after this decision of medical admission system have not enough time in their hand to prepare themselves for varsity admission test. What will they do if the admission test doesn’t take place?
This year about 70 thousand students have GPA 5 in the HSC and the number was almost same in the SSC. Among them almost 10000 got golden A+ both in SSC and in HSC while there is sit available only 3000. What will other students do who have golden A+?
Finally, Question papers of eight educational boards and a madrasah board are not prepared in the same way. Therefore, it is not possible to judge merit through tests conducted with different question papers
Therefore, there is not a single reason that is in support of the new process of admission. Students are in the path now. While they are struggling for a fair way to prove their merit, the nasty government is saying that the coaching centres are behind their protest A lawyer, Yunus Ali, challenged the decision at the High Court yesterday. So now it’s time to look at how the government react whether it is with what the students want or not!
